Application at GAMES ACADEMY

Before starting the programs Game or Film Art & Animation, Game Programming, Game Design, Game Production and Interactive Audio Design students must undergo an application procedure in order to keep the quality of the education on its outstanding level.

As these programs result in a specialized degree, an aptitude test is indispensable. Don‘t worry - this procedure is a means for us AND you to check if you can profit from our training.

Rules for a successful application

  • Carefully compile your records and materials. Only then send us your written application. We accept a number of various media for the application - sketches, drawings, renderings, videos, or websites - much you can choose from.
  • Better choose less, but expressive samples of your work - those which you yourself are proud of.
  • Each application will be carefully considered. If we have to refuse your application in the first instance, we will give you advice on how to do better the second time.

Application procedure

Applications are accepted throughout the year. But please apply in time. The GAMES ACADEMY works on the principle „first come, first serve“. Even with an application we consider as good, you might have to wait for the next course start in case your application is handed in too late, due to the limited number of course places. Applicants should contact us roughly four to six months before the start of the training.

If you choose to attend a program, make sure to fill in the training contract and enclose it to your application. The current scale of fees can be found in our Info broschure, via SERVICE. Your contract is valid after you successfully passed our interview and we classified you as professionally suitable and we countersigned your contract.

What to include in my application?

  • Written application
  • Personal data sheet with photo
  • Filled GAMES ACADEMY training contract
  • School certificates, references from interns or trainings
  • Relevant working samples fitting your chosen course

Tips for your working samples:

What do we pay attention to? We are checking your application together with you for talents, requirements for a successful training. GAMES ACADEMY assumes no liability for submitted materials. Submitted materials have to be picked up personally, it is not possible to send back your materials by mail.

Game Art & Animation / Film Art & Animation

You like drawing and painting a lot? Your friends are impressed by your drawings? Or did you gain work experience by working with graphics and 3D programs and prepared some working samples? Then don’t hesitate to send us your working samples! Working samples could be:

  • Drawings, paintings, scribbles (not more than 15 pages)
  • 3D models or clay figures (please send pictures of them, but no models!)
  • Renderings (send them as screenshots, videos or photos)
  • Videos (on CD/DVD as Divx or Quicktime movie)
  • Printed concepts, photos, board games

Interactive Audio Design

You are very creative when it comes to music? You are interested in sound moods and sound atmospheres in interactive media and computer games? If you have always wanted to design individual sound concepts, the Interactive Audio Design course is your first choice!

Interested applicants should have experience either in music and sound design or in programming of audiovisual content. Working sampled could be:

  • Compositions or a piece of music
  • Sound designs or movie dubbings
  • Your own source code, such as animation with Action Script
  • showreels

Additionally, we kindly ask our applicants for a hearing test (audiogram).

Game Programming

You developed your own homepage, small applications or video games? You enjoyed mathematics and physics classes in school? You are particularly interested in graphical effects and the functions behind the scenes.

Then don’t hesitate to send us your working samples:

  • your own applications and games (programming language irrelevant, applications have to run on their own)
  • additional source code extracts with comments
  • your own web page
  • MODS with scripting sequences

Please describe your programs and their function briefly! Programs that require specific development environments cannot be considered.

Modifications (MODS): Please send screenshots and descriptions in your application, but bring the files to your interview so that we can assess them together. Group work can be sent to if you own work clearly marked as yours.

Game Production (Game Producer)

You already gained experience in project management – professionally and privately (e.g. organized LAN parties)? You excel in self organization and know what structures are for? You don’t shy away from legal frameworks, license issues and laws?

If you answered the questions above with yes, you might be ready for the Game Production course at Games Academy. Please send the following documents (if possible):

  • Copies of your leaving certificates, internship certifications, trainings, etc
  • Your own project plans
  • Calculations for events and projects
  • Schedules and flow charts
  • Written down concepts and ideas

Game Design

You think the most important element of a game is its story and the sequence of events? You can look back at times as either an active tabletop, card game or pen and paper player? You can imagine improvements in every game you play, you have your own ideas about their sequence of events and you are writing them down immediately?

Then the Game Design course might be your right choice. Please include to your application some working samples, such as:

  • Your own game concepts and ideas
  • Designed board and card games
  • Pen and paper materials
  • Short stories
  • Your own designed levels (on the common level editor platforms)
  • MODS
