Game Development with XNA Framework
Hi there dear user,
GAMES ACADEMY is offering a very special highlight to everyone who is interested in game programming, “Step by step to your own video game”!
In corporation with M!Games (a German video game magazine), students from Games Academy had the opportunity to explain and illustrate expert topics and technical terms to the readers. In the column “which is which?” [Was ist was?] from the June Issue (06/09), Games Academy students Alfred Bigler (Game Programming course) explained the vast topic of XNA.
Well, now we’re revisiting the topic and add a practical example to give you a better understanding of game development. In a recent issue of M!Games, an ongoing article started with the development of a stand-alone XBOX 360 Indie game, realized with the help of XNA.
Our goal is to develop this game together in order to submit it to XBOX 360 Indie platform. The required programs are available here and the M!Games magazine can be ordered here (in case you are speaking German).
The newest version of the game can be downloaded here.
“Destroid” our very own game!
What we want to do now is creating a 2D space shooter, very much resembling Asteroids and what we need is: graphics to represent the player and two graphics for projectiles, one for the opponent, one for the player.
Next step, we want to control our space ship with the left analog stick of the XBOX 360 controller and we want to shoot our projectiles with the right analog stick. Our enemies will now spawn randomly at positions and will fl towards us. With the help of our projectiles we will be shooting at them before they can reach us.
Now you might think “Gosh, that sounds complicated!”, but don’t worry we will deal with every problem step by step and develop the game together. In further issues of the M!Games magazine, every important step will be dealt with and here on the GAMES ACADEMY website we’ll support you with the latest updates of the game. Have Fun!
